The people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon
Fri Oct 07, 2005 at 08:01:19 AM PDT
This is not a diary about how bad George Bush is as much as how disheartening his dishonesty and thus his lost opportunities have created so much destruction and so much disappointment.
Gone are the days of unity and a sense of purpose. Gone are the days of comity and understanding. Gone are the days of real compassion and real responsibility. Gone are the days that unless the subject was sex you could pretty much believe what the president was saying. I'm not going to claim that Iraq was the biggest disappointment of this presidency but a symptom of a much greater disappointment--a complete and utter lack of honesty and understanding with the American people

How a pro-life Democrat can oppose Roberts
Mon Sep 12, 2005 at 09:52:36 AM PDT
First, as a pro-life Democrat one finds him or herself in a lonely place frequently when ideological battles begin to smolder in our party. This has been seen in this blog over the past year (abortion, "f the South", religion, the Pope, etc. etc.) and must always be approached with caution.
Today, we find ourselves teetering on the edge over the abortion debate (and many other "life" issues) again thanks to the President's opportunity to pack the court with right-wingers.
Kristen Breitweiser: "Does Rove Understand 9/11?"
Fri Jun 24, 2005 at 06:40:35 AM PDT
In yesterday's
The Huffington Post
An even more general and probably more important question, "Do Republicans understand 9/11?"
When you read this article, imagine that the dialogue is between the American people and the Republican party. Isn't that what it's all about anyway? It's not how the President screwed up the country it's how Republican policies have turned this country down a dangerous path.
Kristen Breitweiser:
Now Karl, a question for you, since you seem to be the nation's self-styled sensei with regard to 9/11: Is Usama Bin Laden still important? Lately, your coterie of friends seems to be giving out mixed messages. Recall that in the early days, Bin Laden was wanted "dead or alive." Then when Bin Laden slipped through your fingertips in Tora Bora, you downgraded his importance. We were told that Bin Laden was a "desperate man on the run," and a person that President Bush was not "too worried about"...

Evidence for Global Warming "Underwhelming"
Wed Jun 15, 2005 at 08:24:19 AM PDT
A--Hat Inhofe describes the "underwhelming" case for global warming in this
"opposing view" editorial in this morning's
USA TODAY.
Sen. Inhofe in today's Opposing View:
Despite the lack of a scientific consensus to warrant such measures, climate change alarmists -- in the heat of the summer for the scariest effect -- are promoting mandatory caps on carbon dioxide emissions in the USA. It's a classic case of "ready, fire, aim."
More important than A--Hat Inhofe's "view" is Our View--the world's view:

You gotta love Media Matters

First detail on new
Hillary book is a lie
Imagine that...wingers lie. HAHA!
From Media Matters for America:
According to NewsMax, based on an interview with Klein, "LeBoutillier writes" that the book will reveal Moynihan's alleged resistance to Clinton's candidacy, supposedly voiced to Clinton at a meeting with Moynihan, who died in 2003, and his wife, Liz, at their Watergate* apartment:
Still, a few months later Hillary got what she wanted: the prized photo 'op' at the Moynihan's upstate farm. There, as she announced her candidacy, Pat and Liz Moynihan stood and in effect gave their 'blessing' to this out-of-stater who was parachuting in to create her own base for an inevitable White House run.
Religion, the Marriage Gap, and Our Future
Mon Apr 18, 2005 at 08:52:32 AM PDT
This diary draws from a few weeks of diaries, comments, etc. regarding the Pope, religion, and the role of faith in politics. More specifically the spate of diaries recently as "statements to pastordan" and what will probably become a backlash (
here,
here, and
here)to those diaries that in some ways has already begun...as if there wasn't enough of a response here to the few diaries remembering the Pope and the subsequent religious debate (
here,
here, and
here) that it caused.
First, let's try to start with a grounding in fact (or polls) ;)
It's important to remember that 75% of Americans consider themselves Christian. The rest include those who are members of other faiths and those who consider themselves secular (a large chunk of the "others").
Now, onto my opinion:
If Democrats can't speak of the faith that drives many of us to care for the poor, elderly, our children, and the environment then we cannot expect to expand our margins.

Take Back Your Neighborhood...from the Negroes
Tue Apr 12, 2005 at 12:30:18 PM PDT
Just a couple months ago my wife and I had a knock at the door, which startled us because it's so rare. We answered the door and found a women with pamphlets going around the neighborhood asking if we had heard or seen anything late at night on a Tuesday or early in the morning on a Wed on the next street over from us.
We never pass that portion of the neighborhood except when we take the dog for a walk, so our answer was no. Well, this lady had her car broken into and a laptop was stolen. Being new to the neighborhood, she informed us that this neighborhood has had a couple instances like this in the past year.
We had known of a burglary not too far down the road but we didn't think of our neighborhood as a bad one. It is a very diverse neighborhood with a large number of African-American families where we see more young black kids then young white kids but we've never really thought much about it...except that my wife finds black kids especially cute.
More intrigue ;) on the flip.
[ATTENTION PLEASE]: Time For Bed People...
Tue Mar 29, 2005 at 08:32:02 PM PDT
New Poll Shows Americans Getting Less Sleep
This diary will self-destruct in 30 minutes. If you all aren't in bed by then well...
I'm working a double. I have an excuse. Do you? No, blogging isn't an excuse.
Get some sleep people. I need it and so to do you.
Get some good sleep so you'll have the energy to battle those evil Republicans and get your work done tomorrow ;)
Good night...to those who take this advice.
Shhh....ease into bed now...don't wake up your partner...or dog...or if you don't have either, it's still a good idea to ease into bed.
Sweet dreams of dancing Reids rejoicing in a new Democratic majority....
Night
Update [2005-3-29 23:37:21 by mapKY]: I've decided not to delete this diary since there are people on the West Coast who will still need this message by the time I'm in bed.
Terri speaks: "I want to live" & My Apology
Fri Mar 25, 2005 at 03:56:02 PM PDT
I must start out by apologizing to the dKos community. I have been a somewhat tepid supporter of keeping Terri Shiavo alive. As a pro-life Catholic Democrat, I believe that when there is no living will and disagreement on her intention--you have to side with life.
The reason for my apology:
MSNBC has just posted on their website (7:15pm) this story with amazing and unbelievable claims--HERE.
In one of the most recent filings in a state court, the Schindlers claim that their daughter tried to utter the sentence on March 18: "I want to live."
Update [2005-3-25 19:24:10 by mapKY]: And here on
CNN
"She managed to articulate the first two vowel sounds, first articulating AHHHHHHH and then virtually screaming WAAAAAAAA," the motion said.
Update [2005-3-25 19:43:29 by mapKY]: And of coarse
Fox News.
So, the cable news channels have taken it hook, line, and sinker...I guess we can expect this turn in events to be the talk this weekend...
Political Compass Test for Newbies (w/ confusing poll)
Thu Mar 24, 2005 at 08:56:01 AM PDT
Many a diary has been done on this survey but I could only a few good hits on the dKos search engine regarding it.
Most recently Delaware Dem in January and we know that dKos has grown so much since then. So, for those of you who haven't taken the test before or don't remember exactly where you placed or you're new to the site and would like to see where you fall--go right ahead HERE.
I invite those that have taken the test and would like to share the findings again, please do so. Hopefully, some veterans of dKos will volunteer their political compass score so we can make fun of their commie nature. ;)
Here's mine:
Economic Left/Right: -5.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.95
Same side as Ghandi, Mandela and the Dalai Lama.
Slightly commie but spiritual about it? Or just just a light honey glazed anarchist topping on my communist chicken?
Make Tivo a Wedge Issue
Thu Mar 17, 2005 at 06:29:47 AM PDT
For those of you who have Tivo or in my case a Dish Network 522, you understand what Tivo has done for television viewing. When the wife wants to watch American Idol and you want to vomit--you can just record either or and come back to it later. Need to run out and get something to eat--just pause it or record it. Shiz Zam! Presto! Many hours of enjoyment at your finger tips you would otherwise have forgotten or missed for other reasons.
I know Kos is a big fan of Tivo'ing for his sci-fi addiction. I am a big fan of using it to grab the Daily Show, Lost, West Wing, NOW, Frontline, and my wife's favorite (not really) Dog the Bounty Hunter.
Everyone knows we need to be proactive about issues and drive the debate instead of playing defense all the time. I propose that we make Tivo a wedge issue. What do I mean by that? Somehow we have to get Republicans to be against it. That's where I need your help. DVD players are everywhere and in my opinions DVRs should be the next DVD player.

Watching Fahrenheit 9/11 Again and Ready to Fight
Tue Mar 08, 2005 at 09:22:19 AM PDT
I'm watching it right now as I close in on the last four hours of my double shift. After watching it umpteen times I almost teared up again when the Black congressmen and women came to the floor of the joint session to protest the Florida votes.
This is why we fight.
We fight because there are people out there who believe in us and support us. Who fought for our ideals when many of us didn't want to fight the shamefulness that was the Florida fiasco in 2000.
We fight because unlike some of us their voices aren't always heard.
We fight because we stand for something more than our own self interests.
Don Imus does GOP dirty work: Outing Anderson Cooper?
Mon Mar 07, 2005 at 07:04:56 AM PDT
On this morning's Imus in the Morning Show on MSNBC...Bigot Bernard referred to a
column in the
NY Daily News about Anderson Cooper being gay. Then after a half-assed admonishment of Bernard by Imus calling Bernard a "bald stooge" (paraphrasing) then in the next breath Imus refers to gays and their "aberrent behavior" as something he doesn't agree with. I think it would be appropriate for interested parties to let MSNBC know that the "possible" outing of a gay person
is not comedy and is reckless towards a person's privacy and possibly their career considering it is completely unfounded gossip at this point and Cooper has SAID NOTHING regarding it.
Dumbass Drudge Distorts Dean
Wed Mar 02, 2005 at 10:56:18 AM PDT
In his consistent and characteristic fashion, Matt Drudge again attempts to distort, distract, and sometimes completely fabricate stories for personal and conservative political gain with this front page headline:
Dean: Pro-life Dems care about kids 'before they're born'...
Of coarse if you are pro-life like myself and thought "OMG why would we he say something like that," you would have clicked on the AP Story and would have found what Dean actually said and is great news to Southern Democrats like myself:
Why third shift sucks
Tue Mar 01, 2005 at 03:49:33 AM PDT
Yeah, I'm trying to find a replacement for my third shift front desk clerk but until then I'm stuck working Monday 3rd shifts. If you've worked third shift before you know the throbbing bone pain that is the "grave yard" shift. Before I became manager, I worked many a third shift. Mostly during one summer when I wanted to save up enough to pay for tuition for one semester at UK instead of taking out a loan.
So, for a couple months during school and throughout the summer I bussed tables during the week and worked third shift on the weekends. Now, I only worked two to three third shifts a week, so my body never really adjusted but you do found a rhythm. Everything you do you do with a purpose (if it's not already layed out for you) and you get a routine going. Now, as I cover for one of my workers who quit for a better paying job I think about how painfully tired I will be from 8 to 4 (my normal shift) and wonder why we need this dreadful shift.
Democrats bombarding my inbox

What is up with all the solicitations and
Action Alerts? Could there be a little more coordination on when and how many fundraising solicitations and action alerts are emailed to our inboxes.
Example from the last two weeks:
4 emails from John Kerry
3 emails from John Edwards and One America Committee
4 from DNC
4 emails from DSCC(Sen. Reid, Sen. Schumer, Ann Lewis)
2 from DCCC (Rep. Emmanuel)

Got Conservatism?
Reminding people of how "conservative" their Republican presidents have been might help to ground people in their understanding of how President Bush and Republicans ultimately want to continue to help themselves (tax cuts, etc.) at the expense of younger generations. Yeah, he says his SS reform "helps" younger workers but that depends on your definition of the word help. If help means keeping people who turn out to vote at higher rates then young people happy at the expense of younger people--then he is helping young people. See the Slate articlebelow if you haven't already.
The kiss heard around the world...
Thu Feb 03, 2005 at 07:15:42 AM PDT
What was up with Lieberman and Bush making out before the State of the Union? That was a smacker of kiss if I've ever seen one.
I mean it's one thing to sell out the Democrats on every major issue since 2000 (and many times before) but to let Bush give you a big smooch...COME ON!!! That's....just GAY!!!
